Frog drums originated in South East Asia where they were used as ceremonial and sacred objects to call for rain, thus ensuring a bountiful crop. They form a special category of instruments, made from solid bronze and used by the indigenous people of Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. Rain drums had many uses including when tipped upside down as storage for jewellery, special ceremonial items and even rice grains were stored inside the drums in preparation of the next planting season. Once carefully packed they were often buried underground for safety. They were generally passed down to the first son and in some cases all or part of the drum was buried with the original owner. The exact age of our drum is unknown, however, it is presumed to date to within the last 30-40 years. It features an extensive display of intricate rings, geometric patterns and designs, with a 12 pointed star in the centre, making this of the Karen type. Decorations continue along the outside also with solid bronze frogs climbing up the outside edge and handles at the outer edge for carrying.
